TRAVEL WITH PRIDE AND PEACE OF MIND

Like any other traveler, an LGBTQ+ traveler’s safety and security is always a priority and primary concern when considering places to visit. Each destination have varying cultures to take into account, and grasping an overview of the local community particularly their attitude towards the LGBTQ+ community is an important consideration.

IMMERSE IN LOCAL CULTURE

The Japanese in general are quite conservative and sensitive to public displays of affection, so it is helpful to pay respect and be conscious of this during your visit. Locals esteem a certain level of emotional reservation, and visitors may observe that this also holds true even for straight couples. While engaging in icha-icha (a blanket word which means being lovey-dovey in public) can sometimes surprise the Japanese, they are extremely respectful people particularly to foreign visitors.

Laid back and fun-loving people, Osaka has a relatively large LGBTQ+ community and is an enjoyable and secure city in Japan. The local government actively supports LGBTQ+ with campaigns and initiatives for the community, with even one of its government districts being the first in Japan officially supporting LGBTQ+ human rights.

PRACTICE DUE DILIGENCE

Do your research and be mindful of the overshare during the course of your travel. While every travel circumstance may be different, trusting your gut and researching on experiences of those within the community or leveraging your network are always helpful.

Forums and apps make it much easier to connect and meet locals or fellow visitors within the community, but as with all travelers, one must err on the side of caution.
