Swissôtel Nankai Osaka - Luxury hotel - How To Wear A Yukata

How To Wear A Yukata

Add a touch of local tradition – we know you want to look your best and take some great photos in your yukata!

A yukata is quite different from Western clothing, so it may feel unfamiliar at first.

Read along and let our hotel team help you wear it comfortably and with confidence.

WEARING THE YUKATA IN 4 EASY STEPS!

OUR TEAM’S TOP TIPS IN WEARING THE YUKATA

YUKATA LENGTH

The hem should fall at ankle level to avoid tripping. You can adjust the height at the hips (for men) or the waist (for women), then secure it with the obi.

PUTTING IT ON

The trick is to keep your back straight and gently spread the fabric to decide how loose or you would like it to be. When adjusting the right side, tuck it as far back as possible to achieve a comfortably snug fit.

OBI PLACEMENT

Women typically wear the obi around the waist, while men usually wear it lower, around the hipbone. Style it your way – knot it in front for impact or turn it to the back for a sleek finish!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER!

If you are not accustomed to traditional Japanese clothing, please keep the following in mind:

  • As yukata are generally considered as sleepwear, please refrain from wearing them in public areas of the hotel.
  • Always wrap left over right. Wearing the right side over the left is reserved for ceremonial purposes after death.
  • Ladies should avoid opening the collar too much. It should reveal only a slight hollow at the base of the neck.
  • Sleeves are longer than everyday clothing, so take care when eating. When reaching forward, gently hold the cuff of your sleeve with your other hand.
  • When sitting on a chair, keep your knees together to avoid exposing undergarments.
  • When walking or going to bed, lightly lift the hem to prevent stepping on it, as the fabric can spread easily.
